The Wonderful Flat Iron

Friend or Foe!?

One of the greatest inventions is the Flat Iron which was invented in 1912.

Flat Irons have controlled heat and both plates heat evenly. Unlike the irons that you put into the stove, no one knows what temperature it has when it comes out of the stove, it could be too hot and can damage your hair.

Flat-irons arrange the H-Bonds (Hydrogen Bond) to form a shape or curl depending on how much you turn the iron.

Flat-iron should be use on clean, shampooed and condition hair for the health of your hair. It is ok to be used once or twice per week. Do not flat iron your hair everyday because it will dry out your H bonds and could cause breakage.** Remember the better the plates on the flat-iron the better the iron**

I recommend that you shampoo and condition every time that you work out or sweat, then flat-iron on clean hair.

There are some leave-in conditioners that work very well with flat-ironing; such as Design Essentials leave-in hydrating conditioner and HCO; also Tri Organic Complex by Chromastics.

Winter Hair Woes

Today is December 22nd, 2011 and it is the first day of winter.

Many years ago by now we would be covered in snow in NY; however outside the temperature is 58 degrees. Nevertheless we have heat in our homes and apartments that tends to dry out our hair.
This information is for hair that has been chemically enhanced, relaxed, semi, demi or permanently color.

The air is dryer, indoor heat is dryer and we tend to shampoo and condition less, this can lead to hair breakage. Hair on the scalp grows at the average rate of ½ inch or less per month.

The average number of strands of hair on your head is 90,000 to 140,000 strands. Each of these strands are very precious. If you see many strands of hair in your comb, sink or bed you should be concerned. Check with a qualified Hair care person for advice who may help you or recommend a MD for your condition.

In the winter shampoo your hair once or twice per week, condition with a moisturizing conditioner. Hair is weaker when wet; add conditioner always before combing with. Start at the ends to detangle and comb toward the root very gently. Remember if you see a strand of broken hair 2 inches or more, just think how long it would take to replace the broken hair?

Beware! Beware! Chemicals!

The chemical straightening market has been going on since the early 50′s to the public. The chemical relaxer has improved tremendously, making it safe in the hands of a professional hair stylist.  Many companies will put chemical relaxers on the market for lay people to use.  Lye and No-Lye relaxers and Kitty Kits for children.  The latest trend is the straightener that comes after the letter J and ends with the word Treatment.  I have seen so much damaged hair, it would take a life time to restore it all.  My advice to you – seek a professional hair care specialist with years of experience for advice.  Having healthy hair is important to you and me.

We will address this specific chemical process in a forth coming blog post.

Shampoo or not to Shampoo

During the colder months your hair should be shampooed and conditioned at least twice a week.  It should be shampooed more if you work out and are physically active.

Why? The air is dryer and the indoor heat can cause hair to be dry and brittle, which can cause breakage.

At Hair Fashions East, we use excellent moisturizing shampoos and conditioners for dry and dehydrated hair and scalp.  This combination will leave your hair stronger, silkier and your hair will have lots of shine!

Back to School Hair Do’s and Don’ts

Let’s face it your hair completes your total look. How you think and feel about your hair is important. It can either be wonderful or traumatic. Keeping hair drama at a minimum is best.  If your hair is wavy, straight, natural, or braided with or without extensions, then go with it. Here is how you do it.

1. Get a good style cut. This will help the hair to fall in place without the fuss.

2.  Shampoo and condition the hair 2 to 3 times a week depending on style, texture and activity.  Perspiration should not be left in the hair and scalp overnight, it can cause thinning and breakage.

3.  If one of your activities is swimming in a pool, wear a cap and  make sure you cleanse and condition the hair immediately with a special after swim shampoo . I recommend a good conditioner made by a reputable company. Products like eggs, mayonnaise and other food items will not penetrate the hair because the molecules are too large to be absorbed.

Hair should not be so important that it takes you away from your primary goal. You can pay greater attention to your hair during  your school break, holidays and after you finish this part of your education and get your degree.

Come Back to Your Own Hair

Everyone wants to be in style.  Sometimes you may pay the price in a negative way.

A young customer of mine decided to put a weave in her hair.  I had instructed her to only leave it in for a month.  Well it was in a lot longer.  When we removed the weave some of the hair had locked and my customer’s beautiful head of hair was partially gone.  What was so disturbing is she also has a fabulous set of clip-ons that I put together for her.  Let’s talk clip-ons.  They are healthy, safe, practical and stylish. They allow you to create length, volume and texture without the damage.  With Clip-ons you can remove them and shampoo your own hair and scalp as often as needed.

Here is Style without the damage!

Did You Know?

Did you know it is a myth that shampooing the hair 2 and 3 times per week will
dry out the hair?
Most shampoos are mild enough that you can shampoo every day.
How you style the hair may cause you some difficulties. If you have a relaxer, the
real damage is caused by perspiration, working out, running or having hot flashes. This
perspiration should be shampooed as soon as possible.
